This weekend, as Electric Avenue brings thousands to Hagley Park, I’m reminded of the Avenues of Christchurch those tree-lined stalwarts that have long acted as ramparts around the centre of the city. They’re more than just roads; they’re the quiet sentinels of our past, standing watch as generations have crossed their borders in search of adventure, connection, and moments to remember.
As a kid growing up out east, crossing the Avenues felt like stepping into another world. Early mornings, I’d catch the bus from Rocking Horse Road, the air crisp, the city still waking. Centennial Pool was the destination, the scent of chlorine sharp in the air, and Mr Brewer waiting on the pool deck, his voice cutting through the stillness as we plunged into the water. The routine was relentless lap after lap before the rest of Christchurch had even begun its day.
5s Old Red the jaunt to the city centre was a joy
Later, it was Moorhouse Avenue, where woodwork and home economics filled the afternoons. I’d stare out the window at Toomey’s Chairs workshop, watching craftsmen at work, shaping and sanding, turning raw wood into something that would last a lifetime. The city was like that too always being built, always changing, always in motion.
And then there were the small treasures hidden within the city’s grid, the moments that made the journey into town special. Queen Anne cinnamon toffees, melting in my pocket on the way to the movies. De Lano’s Magic Centre, where blood pills and trick cards held the power to amaze. Crinkle Cut fries in the Square, a simple treat that felt like a reward for venturing into the heart of Christchurch.
Always a joyful place to visit
Now, with Electric Avenue filling Hagley Park with music, the city feels alive with that same sense of adventure. The festival is more than just a lineup of bands; it’s a celebration of youth, joy, and the energy of music, a reminder of the magic that happens when people come together. Once more, thousands are crossing the sentinel Avenues, stepping into the heart of Christchurch to create new memories, new stories, and new reasons to fall in love with the city all over again.
Because that’s what the Avenues have always been. Not barriers, but gateways to something special.
