Wits about you

Farewell to the Godwits (Kuaka)

Christchurch is a city that embraces change. We’ve rebuilt, reimagined, and reinvented ourselves time and time again. But some departures hit a little differently especially when it comes to the feathery residents who have been part of our landscape for generations.

The Godwits, those tireless little migratory birds that grace our estuaries and shorelines, are once again taking flight, bound for warmer climes. While their annual migration is nothing new, it always feels like a bit of Christchurch leaves with them.

No part of the city treasures these birds more than Southshore. This tight-knit coastal community has such an affinity for the Godwits that they named a street after them Godwit Street, a quiet nod to the long-legged travellers who visit each year before setting off on their incredible journey. For locals, spotting the Godwits along the estuary is a sign of the seasons, a reminder that even in nature, home is not always a fixed place, but a cycle of return and renewal.

Godwit Street, Southshore

The Godwits’ migration is nothing short of extraordinary. After months of foraging along our estuarine mudflats, they embark on a non-stop flight of over 12,000 kilometres, heading toward the Yellow Sea and Alaska. No stopovers, no refuelling just an epic feat of endurance that even the most seasoned travellers would admire.

To honour these remarkable birds, Southshore locals and nature lovers will gather on March 1st for a special farewell event. In true community spirit, the event will mark the Godwits’ departure. It will be a moment to reflect, celebrate, and appreciate Christchurch's unique connection with these world-travelling birds.

Southshore Reserve. You could call this "Cape Farewell" this coming week.

It also reminds us that Christchurch is a city of movement. People come and go, landscapes shift, and yet the essence of this place remains. In the same way, the Godwits return year after year, drawn back by something deep in their nature, as do those who have called Christchurch home.

So, as our feathered friends spread their wings and chase the sun, we bid them farewell—not goodbye, but ‘see you next season.’

Safe travels, Godwits. Southshore and all of Christchurch will be waiting to ring out the bell on your return. See you in Spring
